Archive 101

As part of our Step Up strand, we're offering training to help individuals coming back into the industry after a break, moving into a new role or responsibility level, or improving skills in unscripted TV.

This session aims to provide an insight into how archive can be used within unscripted television productions and the role the archive producer plays in sourcing, licensing archive and delivering the final programme.

Who it's for

Anyone working in unscripted TV with at least 3 unscripted credits who is interested in working within archive and wants to find out more about the role of an archive producer; for those who want to understand the costs and timescales involved in using archive; and for editorial teams looking to develop their understanding of how to utilise archive sources and the practical restrictions around it’s use.

The majority of the Unscripted Skills Fund (USF) online short course offering is for those at early career stage and above. As a result, we generally require applicants to have at least three credits (unless working in a traditionally uncredited role). If you strongly feel you would still benefit from the training, please email USF@screenskills.com so we can assess if an exception should be made.

• Examples of how archive is used within unscripted television.
• The role of the archive producer throughout the production process, from initial research, to final paperwork.
• Key archive sources that can be utilised; And how costs work within archive - from screener fees to licensing terms and costs.
• A brief overview of fair dealing.

• When asked what you hope to gain from the course, please be concise but ensure you cover the specific elements of the topic you would like to gain knowledge of and what gaps in your skillset you believe the course may address. A rewording of the course title or a general comment on career progression does not tell us much about how this course would benefit you.
