Developing your people management skills: Career progression in post and VFX

Complex work-flows, multi-skilled teams, changing work patterns including virtual and hybrid working and the pressures and demands of clients and deadlines require particular skills from managers in post and VFX. 

This course is for those who are keen to progress their management careers in post and VFX for HETV production but perhaps need additional training and support, especially in developing people management skills, to move forward.

The session for those working in post will take place on Thurs 20 Jan 2022

These sessions are supported by the ScreenSkills high-end TV Skills Fund with contributions from UK high-end television productions.

Who it's for

This course is for those who want to develop their people management skills and progress their management careers in post and VFX for HETV production and need support.

Perhaps you have good technical skills but lack experience or confidence in people management? Perhaps you want to improve your people management skills? Perhaps you are concerned that management responsibilities are incompatible with work life balance?  

We especially welcome applications for this course from women and under-represented groups in management roles in post and VFX.

What it covers

• Understanding the role of the manager in post and VFX and ‘what good looks like’

• Understanding your team and their needs

• Understanding intrinsic motivation and the role of mastery, autonomy and purpose in releasing the potential of your team

• Focussing on outcomes, the big picture, and how your role contributes to the business

• Effective delegation (ensuring you are not doing your ‘old job’ as well as your manager role)

• Giving effective feedback

• Handling challenging situations – a framework and tips to help you keep your head

• Mapping your next steps: identifying the skills you need to develop and creating an action plan for your development as a manager in order to progress your career in post & VFX.    

The course includes an initial online self-assessment to help identify your needs and get the best out of the course plus a one-to-one mentoring session after the course to support you in putting your people management skills into action and develop your career.
