The ScreenSkills HETV Skills Fund is offering the chance for those working in mid-level or senior roles in HETV lighting departments to apply for a bursary of up to £5,000 to fund training and for any travel and accommodation costs required to attend.

This programme is funded by the ScreenSkills High-end TV Skills Fund made up of contributions from high-end TV productions made in the UK.

Who it's for

These bursaries are for those who work in HETV in the following roles:

  • electricians/lighting technicians
  • practical electricians
  • lighting desk operators
  • generator operators
  • best boys/assistant chief lighting technicians
  • gaffers

These bursaries are not for new entrants wishing to start a career in the lighting department or for electrical trainees. You must work predominantly in HETV and have at least two HETV credits in one of the above roles.

What it covers

The courses supported may depend on the individual’s requirements but might include:

  • City & Guilds 2365 Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation
  • manual handling
  • working at heights
  • boom and scissor lift courses
  • PAT testing
  • courses which cover LAN networks (wireless control technologies)
  • DMX course (covering the remote control of fixtures, dimmers & accessories)
  • 18th edition BS7671 course
  • temp 7909 qualification
  • or other relevant training

We recommend you choose a course that is at least four weeks ahead of your bursary application.

For travel and accommodation needed to attend training, we can fund:

  • accommodation for training (up to £140 a night in South East England and up to £100 a night outside South East England)
  • travel for training (e.g. train fares and mileage at 45p per mile)

What we won’t fund:

  • we don’t fund retrospectively so you can’t claim for training you have already undertaken
  • we don’t fund academic courses
  • ScreenSkills cannot offer bursaries on courses it already funds
  • ScreenSkills cannot offer bursaries to those who have already received a bursary within the past 12 months
