Movie Magic Budgeting for HETV in Wales

A 2023 programme of high-end TV Movie Magic budgeting courses run by Sgil Cymru, in association with Grand Scheme Media and Addie Orfila Training.

This programme is also supported by Entertainment Partners.

Multiple online training opportunities will be delivered in Wales over four months to enable professionals working in high-end television to get a better understanding of the industry standard software used for budgeting on high-end TV productions.

This programme is funded by the ScreenSkills High-End TV Skills Fund made up of contributions from UK high-end TV productions. 

Who it's for

The training is open to people already in the industry who are working or moving over to work in high-end TV as production managers, ADs, production accountants and line producers but who have yet to get to grips with Movie Magic software. All applicants must be based in Wales.

The training will be delivered online via the Zoom platform. Participants will need a PC or Mac with stable internet connection. Zoom can be accessed through a web browser or downloaded to your device.

Trainees will be given access to Movie Magic training licenses and subscriptions and will need to install the relevant Movie Magic software on a laptop which should be brought to the training session.

What it covers

Effective and efficient  budgets are vital for all productions, and this course will take high-end TV trainees through the essential elements of creating them, using the globally-used, industry-standard software Movie Magic budgeting. 

Trainees will be shown how to use the programme and then will spend time putting into practice what they have learned in a fun and informative way. 

We will take you through the process of setting up a budget from scratch and navigating through the software. 

The training will cover:

• Overview of EP Movie Magic budgeting
• Introduction to budgeting
• Setting up your budgeting format
• Basic controls and navigation
• Top sheet, account level and detail level
• Exercise in globals, groups and fringes
• Currencies
• Budgeting principles and practices
• Reporting/printing

How to apply

Each Movie Magic budgeting course lasts for one day and will be run on the following dates:

• 17 September 10:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 16:30
• 22 October 10:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 16:30
• 19 November 10:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 16:30

In addition to the Movie Magic budgeting course on the dates above, an optional second day will cover Movie Magic scheduling. Please apply here for this course

Trainees are welcome to apply for both scheduling and budgeting courses if they require training in both packages but this is not compulsory.

Training sessions for UK high-end TV professionals based outside of Wales in budgeting and scheduling will be managed and delivered by Grand Scheme Media and Addie Orfila. They will also deliver sessions for those working in Children's TV.
