Music Supervision Training for High-end TV (Northern Ireland)

Are you passionate about music and based in Northern Ireland?
Have you ever wondered about commissioning a bespoke theme tune or how commercial tracks can be licensed for use in High-end TV (HETV)?
This course, led by highly experienced music supervisor Catherine Grimes (Blue Lights, Trying, The Lovers) and the award-winning music team Score Draw Music (Yukee, Lost Lives, Milo), offers participants an engaging insight into the world of music supervision for HETV.
Delivered as two compulsory in-person days alongside a series of online and on-demand sessions, the training will include expert deep dives from guest speakers and cover a variety of topics including licensing and copyright, the value of music, negotiation etiquette, score commissioning, budgeting, file management, contentious use, paperwork and music reporting.
This programme is funded by the ScreenSkills High-end Television Skills Fund made up of contributions from high-end television productions made in the UK.
Who it's for
This course is open to five professionals based in Northern Ireland with an interest in working in music supervision for HETV.
The training is particularly relevant to individuals in HETV editorial and/or production roles who are keen to move into music supervision, and anyone from a music, business or arts background looking for opportunities in HETV music supervision.
Whilst no prior music supervision knowledge or HETV experience is necessary, but a passion for music and an interest in the role of music supervisor is essential.
This training is only open to individuals living and/or working in Northern Ireland.
Please note - selected applicants will be invited to interview for this course.

What it covers
This course will be delivered as two full, compulsory in-person days (12 and 13 November) alongside a series of drop-in sessions (11, 18 and 19 November), which can be attended in person or online. A catch up recording of these drop-in sessions will be available to participants who can’t attend in person, for a limited period. Topics will be approached through a mix of discussions, interactive exercises, case studies and mock briefs.

- approaching and understanding commissioned, commercial and production music
- the importance of paperwork, licensing and cue sheets
- balancing creativity and practicality
- music in scripted and unscripted HETV
- the production process, scheduling and materials
- budgeting, fees and negotiation
- contentious use
- grand rights
- sampling
- copyright protection
- fair dealing
- blanket agreements
Thanks to funding from the ScreenSkills HETV Skills Fund, training will be free for participants to attend and we are able to cover some accommodation and childcare costs if requested.
