This Industry Insight webinar on Assistant Directing is for RTS students and students and tutors on ScreenSkills Select endorsed courses. The webinar will provide you with professional advice on a range of hard to recruit roles direct from industry and focus on supporting you to gain the best opportunity for a successful career in the screen industries.  

ScreenSkills has a series of e-learning modules on Getting into the screen industries which are a prerequisite for attending any Select Session event.

What it covers

Join us for this ScreenSkills Select industry insight webinar in partnership with RTS Scotland and AD Guild where an expert panel will take a deep dive in to the Assistant Directing Department. Hear how the doors opened for individuals and learn about the roles they currently work in such as assistant directing trainee, 3rd AD, 2nd AD and 1st AD. 

The panel for this event is made up of industry members at various levels in the Assistant Directing department, all with insight and knowledge about how to effectively work on Film and TV shows, how to manage a production safely and how to work collaboratively with other Film and TV departments.    

The webinar will be facilitated by Gary Stubbs, Senior Lecturer on ScreenSkills Select endorsed MA Media Production (Film & TV) at University of Sunderland. Gary also works as a freelance Assistant Director and has experience of working at senior levels in drama for leading broadcasters. Gary is a recent BAFTA Connect member and a BAFTA Albert advocate. 

Industry speakers for the webinar include: 

Jez Marshall, 1st AD

Jez is a 1st Assistant Director from the UK with over 15 years experience in the Film and HETV industry.  He has worked in the UK and abroad on productions for Searchlight, Paramount, BBC, ITV, Mammoth Screen and Kudos to name a few.  

Most recently he has completed work on ‘Death In Paradise’,  and the yet to be released ‘Rogue Trooper’ for Liberty Films and the 6 part Disney+ period drama ‘To Cook a Bear’ starring Gustaf Skarsgård.

Jez is also a member of the advisory council for the Assistant Directors Guild UK, on the BECTU AD branch committee and is a member of the Production Guild of Great Britain.

Trevor Puckle, Key 2nd AD

Trevor Puckle began his career in the film & TV industry in January 1977. Now as a 2nd Assistant Director, he has worked on an array of productions from 3 series of “Inspector Morse” films such as “Four Weddings And A Funeral”, “The Man In The Iron Mask” and on the 2nd Units of “Braveheart” and “Sleepy Hollow” to name a few. 

Emmy Brown, 3rd AD 

Emmy Brown is in her 7th year in the industry and has come up from Floor Runner to 3rd AD. She is also a licensed Chaperone and works as a Rep for the AD branch of BECTU. Emmy has worked on titles such as “Black Ops” Series 1 and “Outlander” Series 7. 

Lilly - Mai Smith, Trainee

Lilly- Mai Smith is a Trainee who has actively worked across the industry as a Production Runner, Marshall and Welfare Runner and Chorister across both documentaries and feature length films. Lily has been active as a trainee by applying for ScreenSkills bursaries for software, attended a Movie Magic Scheduling course with AD Guild and the Liverpool Film Office, and actively applied for the ScreenSkills Trainee Finder for 2024-2025.
