Are you based in Cornwall? Do you want to work in TV or film? This one day event explores the practicalities of working on set, a chance to meet heads of department, get some CV advice, and do some networking.

At a time when the screen industries are booming in the UK both in terms of viewing hours and volume of production, ScreenSkills and Screen Cornwall have joined forces to take over the Pydar Pop-up in Truro to shine a spotlight on the opportunities, as well as the challenges, of working on film and TV productions in Cornwall.

Who it's for

This event is aimed at those who are looking to work in behind-the-scenes roles in film and TV in Cornwall and are based in the TR and PL postcodes.

Film and TV productions need a wide range of skills and levels of experience. This event is open to all those based in Cornwall.

You could have valuable transferable skills from experience in other sectors such as painting, construction, lighting, electrics, hair and make-up, logistics and locations, health and safety, accounting or catering. Or you could be finishing an education course. The main criteria is to have a passion for film and TV and a strong work ethic.

What it covers

During this full-day event, you’ll get to meet some local and national heads of department in film and TV, understand what work is available in the area and how to get it, build connections, and learn tips and tricks to help you create a screen-worthy CV.

The day will feature a practical hands-on workshop where you'll be able to help set up a scene for filming. We'll be touching on the work of the different departments: camera, lighting, make-up, costume, directing, and sound,  to demonstrate how each separate department works collaboratively to make the scene happen.

At the end of the day, there will be a chance to put your questions to our panel of local and national heads of departments including:

  • Gareth Ellis Unwin, Oscar-winning producer, The Kings Speech and ScreenSkills head of film and animation
  • Laura Giles, Film producer and Managing Director, Screen Cornwall
  • Alex Withers, 1st AD, Zero Chill, Everyone's Talking About Jamie
  • Mary Farbrother, Cinematographer The Tape, Mary Anning and the Dinosaur Hunters
  • Robert Foster, Production Designer You Don't Know Me,  Rosamunde Pilcher
