The 5As: accessibility for team leaders

This course is part of a wider effort led by the TV Access Project (TAP) to build awareness of the 5As and achieve full inclusion by 2030.

The 5As: Anticipate, Ask, Assess, Adjust, and Advocate, is an industry standard that supports full and equal inclusion of people who are deaf, disabled and/or neurodivergent.

This session is focused on leading teams and will build on your understanding of access by helping you embed the practice of the 5As within teams across production and post-production.

This session is free for attendees and is funded by the TV Access Project.

Who it's for

This session is for anyone in leadership positions who are responsible for managing teams across production and post-production, across HETV, unscripted TV, and children’s TV, animation and film.

This could include directors, producers, heads of department, production managers or anyone who supervises others.

This session is part of a wider series with each session tailored to the responsibilities and job roles of a different area of the UK TV industries. We kindly ask that you only apply to the session that best fits your working responsibilities. The areas of production covered by the other sessions are:

• Production management
• Recruitment
• Casting contributors and talent
• Recces and location
• Live studio and broadcast

Access

We are committed to ensuring all our courses are accessible to everyone. This course is designed to be as interactive as possible and is delivered over Zoom, using Otter. Ai for captioning and Fig Jam as an interactive whiteboard.

Eligibility:

Participants will be required to have, or have completed:

• Three recent credits, including programme title and role
• Knowledge of the Social Model
• ScreenSkills e-learning, CDN or Triple C Training.

Note: credits do not need to be in the same area as the session focus to be valid but please do only apply for the most applicable session.

What it covers

This session will offer attendees the chance to learn how to:

• Explore how to create inclusive team environments using the 5As framework, including what to do when things go wrong.
• Develop skills to overcome production and post-production challenges by anticipating access requirements.
• Conduct effective conversations and exploring adjustments that create security and belonging for your team.

What to expect

CDN and AAA training sessions are online interactive workshops of up to 20 people to facilitate deeper learning.

• Each session will have an introduction, breakout discussion rooms, interactive activities, use of collaborative software, and call-out questions to the room.
• We encourage videos and active discussion in these sessions and ask that you are in an environment where you will be able to speak freely.
• If you do not want to be on video or speak, video off and interaction through chat is also an option.
• We encourage active participation in any form for the full benefit of the session.

Please be aware this session is designed to enable people already working in the UK TV industries to embed the practice of the 5As and is not a session offering advice on how to enter the industry, or for new entrants.

Trainer

All training sessions will be co-led by Access All Areas’ Access manager, Lucy Andrews-Gavin.

Lucy will work alongside a cohort of CDN trainers and co-facilitators; Olivia Renshaw, Chris Pike, and Access All Areas’ associate artists, all bringing a range of lived and professional experience.
