As part of the Mind your business strand, we're offering training in in a range of areas related to business management & development, production finance, legal & business affairs, rights, and compliance, giving individuals the tools needed to thrive in their chosen field in unscripted TV.
In this session, Matt will take you through some of the most commonly encountered types of “Right” in commissioning and production agreements, explaining what they are in simple terms and demystifying the jargon. The proliferation of buyers, from traditional PSBs to digital to streamers, has led to a host of new categories of Rights and definitions in TV agreements. The aim of the session is to give you a better understanding of what each type of Right is, why it is valuable, and to arm you with greater knowledge for your next negotiation.

This session is aimed at production and commissioning staff of all levels who wish to gain a better understanding of what rights exist in a television projects.
Trainer
Matt Angel is an intellectual property solicitor with over 20 years’ experience of high-profile deal-making and contract negotiation in the global television industry. He has held numerous senior in-house positions within the TV sector, including global head of business affairs at Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment; controller of legal & business Affairs at super-indie All3Media; Director of Legal & Business Affairs at James Corden’s Fulwell 73; and chief operating officer of Objective Media Group. He has a wealth of experience dealing with agreements throughout the entire life-cycle of television programming, from creation and development through to commission, distribution and ancillary exploitation. He acts for large production groups, broadcasters, independent production companies, start-ups, distributors, studios, on-screen talent, television executives, individual creators and talent agencies across all programming genres, both in the UK and abroad.
The majority of the USF online short course offering is for those at early career stage and above. As a result, we generally require applicants to have at least three credits (unless working in a traditionally uncredited role).
