Holly-Jasmine Kilvington on the children's TV DreamBIG! programme

Dream Big! is a new entrant programme developed by the Children's TV Skills Fund and run by training provider thinkBIGGER. It provides new entrants with their first job in children’s TV and animation through paid placements at a range of leading production companies.

As part of the programme, Holly-Jasmine received a placement as production coordinator at BBC Studios Kids and Family.

How did you first hear about DreamBIG?

I first saw the DreamBIG! programme advertised in 2023 and really wanted to apply, but I wasn't eligible as I was still studying. In 2024, I saw it again through ScreenSkills and knew I had to apply. The programme’s focus on children's TV was really important for me, and its hands-on experience and professional development opportunities immediately caught my attention.

What were you doing before joining the DreamBIG! programme?

Before joining DreamBIG!, I had recently graduated from Edge Hill University with a first-class honours degree in television. My dissertation explored the representation of family and disability in children's television, based on the media’s role in showcasing underrepresented groups. I was fortunate to receive a scholarship to then attend the Children’s Media Conference in Sheffield, which further cemented my ambition to work in children’s television.

Have you always wanted to work in children’s TV?

Yes! Children’s television has always been an area of interest to me because of its power to educate, inspire, and reflect diverse experiences. I have always been passionate about creating content that is engaging, inclusive, and representative of different communities.

What was the experience of working on a production like? Had you worked on any productions previously?

Before joining DreamBIG!, I had some limited experience in television, but working on a large-scale production was a completely new and exciting challenge. Through the programme, I worked on Blue Peter and the CBeebies Panto, where I was able to contribute as a production coordinator and production runner. The experience was invaluable in preparing me for the fast-paced production environment.

What was your placement role?

I received a placement at BBC Studios Kids & Family and worked as a production coordinator. My role involved organising logistics for location shoots across the country, producing detailed call sheets and schedules, and managing movement orders. I also raised purchase orders and became proficient in essential industry tools such as E-Cat, Silvermouse, BAFTA Albert, and Diamond Diversity Actuals. In the studio gallery, I supported script supervision and music bar counting, which helped me develop crucial live broadcast skills. Additionally, I gained confidence in applying for child licenses and ensuring all safeguarding protocols were met.

What did you find most interesting or eye-opening about working on a children’s TV production?

One of the most eye-opening aspects of working in children’s TV was seeing just how much detail and care go into making content that is engaging, educational, and fun. From accessibility considerations to safeguarding protocols, every decision is made with young audiences in mind. Beyond entertainment, it shapes future change-makers by telling honest stories about real-world issues like climate change, empowering young audiences to understand and take action.

Were there any challenges you came across, and how were they resolved?

Like any fast-paced production, challenges arose, particularly when managing multiple moving parts, such as location shoots, travel logistics, and last-minute schedule changes. I learned the importance of clear communication, adaptability, and problem-solving. With the support of my colleagues and mentors, I became more confident in handling unexpected situations, ensuring everything ran smoothly.

What other aspects of the DreamBIG! programme did you find helpful – how did they help you?

The networking opportunities and industry training through DreamBIG! were invaluable. Learning from experienced professionals, gaining industry insights, and developing technical skills gave me the confidence to step into industry roles. But what truly stood out was the personalised mentorship and ongoing support — not just during the program but beyond. The tailored guidance helped me navigate my career path with clarity, while the strong network of fellow trainees became a vital source of advice, encouragement, and support, especially when transitioning beyond the scheme.

What were your highlights from taking part in DreamBIG?

One of the biggest highlights was working on a production that I grew up watching and admired, Blue Peter. It was also incredibly rewarding to contribute to projects that prioritise accessibility and inclusion. Whilst on the scheme I also received a Breakthrough Talent Award for Production Coordinator of the Year 2024 was an incredible moment that validated all the hard work I had put into developing my career through DreamBIG!.

How do you think programmes like DreamBIG! help the industry?

As a disabled creative living outside of London, the support I received through DreamBIG! was essential in helping me break into the industry. Without programmes like this, accessing the right networks and opportunities can be incredibly challenging. DreamBIG! not only provided the mentorship and guidance I needed, but also connected me with industry professionals who opened doors that might otherwise have been out of reach. Programmes like DreamBIG! are crucial for the industry because they offer hands-on experience and actively seek out new diverse talent.

What’s next? Will you aim to continue to develop a career in children’s TV?

Currently, I’m working as a production coordinator on Blue Peter, with my contract extended until the end of Series 67. My role involves managing film and studio schedules, overseeing travel logistics, and liaising with presenters. Additionally, I serve as presenter liaison and PA to the editor, ensuring smooth communication across departments and prioritising accessibility for both crew and contributors.

Looking ahead, I’m eager to explore script supervising and music bar counting in the studio gallery, while also managing more complex location shoots. My long-term goal is to continue working on productions that engage diverse audiences and promote inclusivity within children’s media. With the experience and skills gained through DreamBIG!, I feel well-equipped to take on new challenges and make a meaningful impact in the industry.
