Film Forward role: team support in virtual production
Sophie Bramley’s career in virtual production has seen her work across a range of creative ventures. From large scale projects in theatre and art spaces to Apple TV’s Criminal Record and a Stormzy video, she has channeled her passion for blending the real and virtual world into a series of varied and immersive creations.
Now she’s stepping into another new landscape by joining the Fim Skills Fund’s Film Forward programme, something she was already aware about before applying, “I heard about Film Forward through ScreenSkills’ website and word of mouth within the virtual production community,” she explained. “It’s recognised as a fantastic stepping stone for emerging talent.”
The progression programme builds upon the existing Film Forward for a new iteration designed to support deaf, disabled and neurodivergent mid-level professionals with three or more years’ experience in virtual production, VFX and post-production. It provides candidates with a paid, four-week placement at one of four partnering companies alongside career coaching to create a rounded learning experience.
Sophie will receive her placement as an Unreal Engine artist in virtual production with Final Pixel, and the prospect of sharpening her skills in a live environment at an established company is one she is relishing. “Film Forward will help me take the next significant step in my career by offering focused support from Final Pixel and connecting me with experienced mentors. It’s a rare opportunity to gain direct exposure to high-end productions, and I’m confident that the skills, confidence, and industry connections I’ll gain will empower me to step into more senior roles in virtual production.”
The opportunity to learn alongside experts within a live environment is another aspect that appeals. “I’m most looking forward to connecting with industry mentors and gaining insights into how leading studios collaborate across departments. I’m excited about the opportunity to work closely with professionals pushing the boundaries of virtual production. Based on the interview, I’m also impressed with the companies' ethos and commitment to innovation.”
Having developed her skills across a diverse background has enabled Sophie to push boundaries within virtual production. Now, through the Film Forward programme, she hopes to be able to help create new worlds and continue to shape storytelling in inventive ways.
As for the programme itself, she is clear about the role it could play for her, and her fellow candidates’, careers: “Programmes like Film Forward are crucial for building a future-proof industry. They nurture new talent, encourage innovation, and promote diversity of thought and experience, all of which are essential as virtual production continues to evolve and reshape the way stories are told.”
