About

Jyoti is currently a researcher at The Garden Productions. Since entering documentary through Grierson DocLab, she has worked as a researcher on high-end documentaries for Netflix, Disney+ (Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story) and Sky Docs (Right to Fight with Georgina Cammalleri) at Raw TV and Dorothy Street Pictures. Having graduated in Politics from Goldsmiths, University of London, and being a photographer, she is looking to merge her critical thinking and writing skills with her creativity and aesthetic skills to become a self-shooting director.

Prior to TV, Jyoti was a carer for her brother, worked in a hospital, was a make-up artist and worked in an art cafe putting on events and film festivals. This experience in different work environments only increased her curiosity in people and varied life experiences.

She aspires to create multiple forms of high-end documentaries, especially in the stories that lie in the intersection between culture and politics, the use of art and music in resistance and social change. She is also interested in the political utility of documentary itself, using film as transformative praxis in our image-saturated society. As an avid writer and researcher with a penchant for de-constructing and re-constructing archive, she is currently trying to explore the form of political essay documentaries. She has also directed experimental music videos and whilst a photographer, created two portrait series Alternative Leamington and The Ravers, documenting and archiving subcultures at the risk of dying out.

Jyoti’s lived experience as a working-class woman of colour and carer only drives her forward and gives her a distinct voice that one day she wishes to champion in others. She aspires to help under-represented people enter the industry, as well as make it a friendlier and accommodating place for other carers.

Jyoti is currently a HETV Leader of Tomorrow. Participants in the three-year inclusion programme for mid-level professionals are nominated by senior colleagues in high-end TV. Her nominator Dee Kahlon said: "Jyoti is someone we have been championing since she was a Grierson Doc Lab researcher. We have no doubt she will play a key role in the future of crafting amazing documentaries that change the way we see the world around us."
