Four apprentices are ready to be welcomed onto the Screen Lighting Technician (SLT) Level 3 Apprenticeship programme launched with training provider Access Industry and employer MBS Equipment Company.
The initiative follows two years of close collaboration with a dedicated trailblazer group to develop the standards to meet industry requirements. The group, comprised of Toby Dare (MBS Equipment Company UK), Steve Knight (Pixipixel), Dave Amphlett (Panalux/Panavision), Jenny Clark (Sunbelt Rentals UK & Ireland), and experienced gaffers Ian Glenister and Mark Thornton, was established to find a fair and equitable route into the lighting department that is both achievable and verifiable.
As part of developing this standard – which is a pathway within a Creative Industries Production Technician standard – ScreenSkills also supported the theatre and live events sector in the review and update of their pathways for creative venue technician and live event technician.
The SLT apprenticeship was launched to industry at an event at Pinewood studios, bringing together all the major production companies and facility houses and raising awareness of the newly developed standard.
The apprentices will now receive placements with MBS Equipment company to gain the core skills and experience needed to begin their careers within the electrical department.
Toby Dare, Director of sustainability and Risk management, MBS Equipment Company, said: “the industry is constantly changing and developing and the skills needed for a successful career in film and TV lighting span a huge range of competencies, from power and data, adjusting quality of light and forming working relationships. This qualification and apprenticeship experience promises to give new entrants access to the equipment, skills and networks needed to form long and successful careers. We hope to be joined by many other rental houses and production companies in expanding this scheme for the benefit of the UK film and TV sector.”
Katie Bambridge, Head of Apprenticeships at Access Industry, said: “We are excited to announce the launch of the first-ever Screen Lighting Technician apprenticeships this month. It has been an incredible journey collaborating with ScreenSkills, IFATE, MBS Equipment company, and industry leaders to bring this initiative to fruition.
“We have developed an innovative apprenticeship program tailored to equip the next generation of lighting professionals with the essential skills, in-depth knowledge, and practical experience required to excel in the competitive film and television industry.
“As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we recognise the crucial role that apprenticeships play in opening new career pathways and fostering the growth of our industry. This program not only provides aspiring technicians with valuable insights into the craft of lighting for screen productions but also contributes to a more skilled workforce. By bridging the gap between education and employment, we are ensuring a sustainable future for our industry while nurturing the talent.”
We congratulate the new apprentices and wish them luck on their journey.
